Some easy to perform stretches post workout

After a workout  a stretch feels good to release tension from taut muscles. Here are some easy to perform stretches. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds or more, to relax muscles and increase mobility   Neck To stretch the neck gently tilt head to one side (bringing ear close to shoulder of that side) with fingers of opposite hand. Hold; repeat on other side. Then repeat stretch, now titling head slightly forward too while tilting it sideways.   Shoulder Roll shoulders back and down. Stretch out both arms at chest level, palms facing up. Stack left elbow under the right one. Now move the left palm towards the left ear, pulling the right arm closer to chest. You’ll feel the stretch on the right shoulder. Hold. Change the arm positions and...

Stability, Mobility, Flexibility – Getting it right

While the act of moving may seem simple enough, there is more than one factor at play, determining the quality of our movements As human beings, nature designed us to move. Power, agility and suppleness vary not just amongst different people, but also among various body parts. This is where terms like ‘mobility’, ‘flexibility’, ‘stability’ get thrown around, often in a confused manner. The human body is a stack of joints alternating between stable and mobile regions, forming what is called the stability-mobility continuum. This forms the crux of human biomechanics. As we move, we place ourselves through this continuum, based on the demands of movement. To understand movement, it is important to correctly understand various terms associated with it.   Joint mobility refers to the uninhibited movement around...

Stress Me Not

Stress is a silent killer. No one is immune. There is a strong need to recognize and manage stress.  How often has your doctor asked about your stress levels? Irrespective of the illness or the system of treatment (allopathy, homeopathy, ayurveda or naturopathy), the doctor is eager to know this. The answer, however, is not straightforward. One physician concluded in a 1951 issue of The British Medical Journal that, “Stress in addition to being itself, was also the cause of itself, and the result of itself.” People have different perceptions of stress and different stressors. Given that there is no conclusive way of measuring stress, understanding it in relation to symptoms and effects is important to recognize and manage it.  The negative impact of stress Stress creates many...

Could Emotional Patterns Make Us More Susceptible To Cancer?

There is a lot of research, clinical data and statistics related to cancer - types, causes, and treatments - available to anyone interested in looking them up. There are, of course, the usual suspects /causes of cancer (more on that later). But there could be a case made out to look beyond the obvious. Scratch deeply and look below the surface. There is another omnipresent trigger we lug around and don’t give this Machiavellian it’s due. It coexists as both cause and effect, feeds off us, is often suppressed, and is usually the last to be addressed, if at all.'Unaddressed and unresolved emotions'.The source of these could be singular, or more likely, multiple. Cracking or crumbling relationships, pressures of work (often tied up with a...

That Gut Feeling

Could you be allergic to what’s on your plate? Struggling with weight loss? You need to get smarter than just cutting out food groups. You get clothes smart with weather. Do you get ‘food smart’ too? Wondering why diets are not working? Hello! When was the last time you met you?Let’s face it. At one point or the other in our lives the topic of food and what it does to our body has surfaced. It may have been your mother valiantly admonishing you to select your greens over the in-your-face junk, that energetic friend with a fab body dishing dietary advice, your exasperated spouse obliquely referring to your stubborn, unrestrained eating habits, your trainer insisting on you maintaining a food diary or your...

Natural resource

An underutilised body is the root cause of so many of our physical- and mental-health problems, but really, all we have to do is move My mother lay completely paralysed for several years, a beautiful woman with a sharp mind, trapped in an immobile body. The crushing ferocity of MS (multiple sclerosis) did not spare even her vocal chords. Her will to fight and survive was indomitable, but the disease defeated her, and she died young.Witnessing her life unfurl was a raw lesson in the true meaning and power of movement. I went about life, sometimes struggling with serious injuries and sometimes fighting an unfortunately rich genetic baggage of health conditions that threatened to take away movement. I fought hard to seek solutions to grasp and...

Let’s Press ‘Play’

"You see a child play, and it is so close to seeing an artist paint, for in play a child says things without uttering a word. You can see how he solves his problems. You can also see what's wrong. Young children, especially, have enormous creativity, and whatever's in them, rises to the surface in free play." - Erik Erikson Schools have a tremendous opportunity and an important responsibility to contribute to a child's journey of growth and augmenting efforts of parents and caregivers. While they are centers of study, schools have the power to evolve into better centers of learning.Children learn a lot through play. In play, they learn how to learn, so its serious work. This is their functional truth. Any program of study...

Nostalgic Romanticism or Changing Reality?

Is it the queer irony of our times? We are more in-tune with the idea of health but are less healthy. We have more conveniences and comforts in our lives but less time. We have greater access to means but less intent to avail. Could we be a living contradiction to what we profess to be our reality? There is definitely a generational shift happening around us…and not of the desirable kind. Yes, every generation feels they grew up in a better time (and were better) than the current lot and one may be prone to dismissing this assumption as mere nostalgic romanticism. But a recent experience brought this thought to the fore and I feel compelled to share it. It exposed a lot about the...
