Why Leaders Need Self-Care

A greater need for focusing on effective employee wellbeing, as part of Corporate Wellness, has undeniably grown now. However, there is an equally strong and urgent case for business leaders to focus on their self-care, too, building on their Wellness quotient along with those of the people who work for them. Here are a few simple reasons justifying this compelling necessity:Demands Of Leadership  In times of crisis, people look up to their leaders for reassurance and some semblance of certainty and control. However, COVID-19 has not only thrown open unexpected crises, but also a protracted, ongoing one. Exposure to such a long-drawn and heightened crisis, with no parallels in recent memory, has put leadership under severe duress of its own. The strain has been felt even by the most seasoned. Wellness Models & Role Of New-Age Leadership

Along with all else, COVID-19 has changed the hues and challenges of leadership substantially and perceptibly. The concept of a VUCA world exists since way before the pandemic hit, but making sense of recent, radical and unprecedented disruptions across levels – individual, enterprise and world – is going to need and forcibly seed serious changes, both subtle and pronounced. The pandemic has just blitzed urgency by openly exposing cracks and chasms in our thinking, attitude and approach to work, home, wellness, in general, and life, in particular. It has been a great leveller in reminding us that at the bottom of it all, we are humans first. To be honest, some of these changes are long overdue and this exposure a matter of time and trigger. Borne out...

Women Leaders, Work & Wellness

“You educate a man, you educate a man. You educate a woman, you educate a generation.” - Brigham Young These words made me ponder. It is an obvious statement, yet not so obviously acknowledged, including by women themselves. While many societies are still struggling with embracing true gender equality, diversity, and inclusion beyond the rhetoric, it speaks to the power and force of women operating through it all. To me, it doesn’t jump out as a man vs. woman battle, rather, as a powerful potential of women still lying untapped. There are a lot of women who naturally learn by way of being primary caregivers and multi-tasking the way they do, across strata of society. They draw incessantly from their internal reserves to fulfill multifarious demands placed on them,...

Exercising With Arthritis

What Is Arthritis? Arthritis is a joint disorder causing inflammation and pain of joints. There can be swelling and tenderness in one or more joints of the body.  A joint is part of the body where two or more bones meet. Social Media & Decision-Making For Wellness

Social Media is one of the most potent and powerful media connecting people across geographical boundaries and timelines. It allows us to consume colossal amounts of information on just about any conceivable topic in multiple formats. Entertainment, education, news, arts & sciences… information pertaining to any field is available 24/7. You are only limited by your own choices and ability to surf. This can feel very liberating and empowering. However, as with everything else in life, it comes with caveats. The pace of social media is so frenetic that it gets quickly overwhelming and can cloud one’s better judgment. One needs to stay vigilant against getting swept up in the torrent of (glitzy) information, not abandon due diligence in sieving what is relevant and in authenticating...

Challenges for Youth – How adults can help

10 big reasons parents and coaches should read this NOW. Guiding and coaching youth for their physical, mental and emotional needs requires an approach different from treating them as miniature adults. Here's what you need to remember to stay on top of things and up your game, while upping theirs, without going bananas.  I recently conducted a webinar with parents of young children & adolescents, some beginners in sports, and some graduating to competitive levels. We covered concerns relating to physical training, nutrition, injury management etc. The questions coming my way revealed some interesting insights, not all surprising. Sharing a few observations for the parent/adult in you:1) Children aren't miniature adults.Their training programs need to be intelligently designed for their age group and commensurate with their development timelines...

Some easy to perform stretches post workout

After a workout  a stretch feels good to release tension from taut muscles. Here are some easy to perform stretches. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds or more, to relax muscles and increase mobility   Neck To stretch the neck gently tilt head to one side (bringing ear close to shoulder of that side) with fingers of opposite hand. Hold; repeat on other side. Then repeat stretch, now titling head slightly forward too while tilting it sideways.   Shoulder Roll shoulders back and down. Stretch out both arms at chest level, palms facing up. Stack left elbow under the right one. Now move the left palm towards the left ear, pulling the right arm closer to chest. You’ll feel the stretch on the right shoulder. Hold. Change the arm positions and...

Stability, Mobility, Flexibility – Getting it right

While the act of moving may seem simple enough, there is more than one factor at play, determining the quality of our movements As human beings, nature designed us to move. Power, agility and suppleness vary not just amongst different people, but also among various body parts. This is where terms like ‘mobility’, ‘flexibility’, ‘stability’ get thrown around, often in a confused manner. The human body is a stack of joints alternating between stable and mobile regions, forming what is called the stability-mobility continuum. This forms the crux of human biomechanics. As we move, we place ourselves through this continuum, based on the demands of movement. To understand movement, it is important to correctly understand various terms associated with it.   Joint mobility refers to the uninhibited movement around...

Stress Me Not

Stress is a silent killer. No one is immune. There is a strong need to recognize and manage stress.  How often has your doctor asked about your stress levels? Irrespective of the illness or the system of treatment (allopathy, homeopathy, ayurveda or naturopathy), the doctor is eager to know this. The answer, however, is not straightforward. One physician concluded in a 1951 issue of The British Medical Journal that, “Stress in addition to being itself, was also the cause of itself, and the result of itself.” People have different perceptions of stress and different stressors. Given that there is no conclusive way of measuring stress, understanding it in relation to symptoms and effects is important to recognize and manage it.  The negative impact of stress Stress creates many...

Could Emotional Patterns Make Us More Susceptible To Cancer?

There is a lot of research, clinical data and statistics related to cancer - types, causes, and treatments - available to anyone interested in looking them up. There are, of course, the usual suspects /causes of cancer (more on that later). But there could be a case made out to look beyond the obvious. Scratch deeply and look below the surface. There is another omnipresent trigger we lug around and don’t give this Machiavellian it’s due. It coexists as both cause and effect, feeds off us, is often suppressed, and is usually the last to be addressed, if at all.'Unaddressed and unresolved emotions'.The source of these could be singular, or more likely, multiple. Cracking or crumbling relationships, pressures of work (often tied up with a...
